POLAND'S NEW GATEWAY

Poland begins building on the sea: 'Largest investment' to create 186 hectares of new land

Poland's ruling Civic Coalition has announced the start of a monumental infrastructure project on the country's western coast. Dubbed 'Przylądek Pomerania', the new deep-water port is set to physically expand Poland's territory into the Baltic Sea and reshape its economic landscape.

Poland’s ruling political alliance, the Civic Coalition, took to Instagram this week to enthusiastically announce the launch of a project of truly historic and transformative proportions. In a compelling post featuring a dedicated official in a high-visibility vest speaking at a major press conference, the party proudly declared, "The largest investment in the history of the Polish western coast has started!" This landmark initiative marks a bold and optimistic new chapter for the nation's maritime future, promising unprecedented growth and prosperity for the entire region.

The project, named Przylądek Pomerania (Cape Pomerania), is a new deep-water container terminal in Świnoujście. The scale of the undertaking is immense. According to the coalition's post, it will involve the creation of 186 hectares of new land reclaimed from the sea, providing a new port capable of "receiving the largest container ships on the Baltic Sea."

A Project of Historic Scale

The social media announcement coincides with the official commencement of construction, which began on July 13. This is not merely a digital campaign but the start of a tangible, five-year-long development. The total value of the investment is estimated at a staggering 10 billion PLN, making it one of the most significant port projects in Poland's recent history, with some comparing its scale to the construction of the port of Gdynia in the interwar period.

Once complete, the terminal will boast a 1.3-kilometre-long quay and a basin depth of 17 metres, allowing it to service the massive 400-metre-long container vessels that navigate the Baltic. Its strategic goal is to establish Poland as a major logistics gateway for Central and Eastern Europe, positioning it to compete with established European hubs like Hamburg. The port is also designed for dual civil-military use and will incorporate modern, zero-emission technologies to function as an "ecological port."

Political Backing and Public Reaction

The announcement is a significant moment for the Civic Coalition government, led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The presence of government officials like Vice-Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka at the launch event underscores the project's national importance. This was not lost on social media users, with one commenter writing, "ARKADIUSZ," followed by a series of supportive symbols. Another user referenced the coalition's campaign slogan, "You will know them by their specifics," indicating approval of the government delivering on ambitious promises.

While the official account for Przylądek Pomerania invited users to follow its profile for updates, other comments touched upon local concerns, with one person asking, "How about some connections from Gdańsk to the peninsula?"

The first phase of construction, a technical road, is expected to take ten months. The entire project is a long-term vision, but its launch marks a definitive step towards cementing Poland's position as a key player in European maritime trade.
